Does Nezuko Become Human?

If you’re an anime enthusiast, chances are you’ve either watched Demon Slayer, added it to your watchlist, or received strong recommendations from fellow fans. Demon Slayer stands out as one of the most popular anime series of the past decade, encompassing elements of tragedy, comedy, horror, thriller, and action.

Renowned for its expertly choreographed fight scenes, character design, and storyline, its popularity surged with the announcement of its anime adaptation. Ufotable’s consistency ensured the adaptation featured some of the finest battle scenes in modern anime.

The story primarily revolves around Tanjiro Kamado, striving to cure his younger sister, Nezuko Kamado, unexpectedly turned into a demon by Muzan. Nezuko, a sweet and beloved character, remains a pivotal figure alongside her brother.

Demon Slayer focuses on Tanjiro’s quest to restore her humanity. The burning question remains: does Nezuko regain her human form, and what sacrifices must Tanjiro make? As of now, the series hasn’t addressed this, leaving fans curious. However, if you’ve delved into the manga, you’re privy to the unfolding events. For those eager for answers without delving into the manga, here’s what you’ve been seeking.

Background

The Kamado family resided in a snowy mountainous region, where Tanjiro worked as a coal seller in a nearby town. Nezuko, his younger sister, assisted their mother in caring for their siblings. Tragedy struck the Kamado family when Tanjiro returned home to discover a gruesome scene—his mother and six siblings brutally slain, except for Nezuko, who had transformed into a demon.

Though Tanjiro rushed to seek help for Nezuko, she attacked him, revealing her transformed state.

During Nezuko’s assault, Giyuu, a Demon Slayer, aimed to eliminate her. However, Tanjiro intervened, preventing Giyuu from harming his sister. Surprisingly, Nezuko exhibited traces of her human self. Recognizing Tanjiro’s need for assistance, Giyuu guided him to Urokodaki, a former Demon Slayer.

Urokodaki enlightened Tanjiro about the Demon Slayer Corps, the nature of demons, and revealed that Muzan orchestrated the massacre of Tanjiro’s family. Urokodaki mentored Tanjiro to become a Demon Slayer, with Tanjiro dedicating himself to restoring Nezuko’s humanity.

As Tanjiro embarked on his Demon Slayer journey, Urokodaki cared for Nezuko, teaching her to refrain from harming humans. Urokodaki, serving as Tanjiro’s mentor, significantly shaped Nezuko’s perception of humans beyond her brother.

He employed a method to remind Nezuko of her family by showing her their photo whenever she encountered a human. This approach instilled in her a deep affection for humans, associating each person she met with her beloved family members.

Is it possible for Nezuko to turn human?

While humans have the potential to transform into demons, the reverse is not true. Muzan Kibutsuji, the original demon, possessed the exclusive ability to convert humans into demons. Demons, ancient creatures existing for centuries, if not millennia, can only be vanquished by demon slayers, sunlight exposure, or specific techniques; mere hunger isn’t fatal to them.

Surprisingly, Nezuko exhibits immunity to sunlight and possesses an awakened form, granting her an advantage in combat against other demons. From the start, Nezuko has stood apart from other demons. Giyuu notes that demons favor consuming their own kin as they find them more delectable.

Contrary to expectations, Nezuko defends Tanjiro rather than succumbing to her primal instincts. The reversion of these creatures to human form is an unusual and unprecedented phenomenon.

During the Asakusa Arc, Tanjiro encounters two demons, Tamayo and Yushiro. Apart from the demon Nezuko, these demons are liberated from Muzan’s influence. Tamayo, a knowledgeable doctor familiar with both humans and demons, possesses the unique ability, like Muzan, to turn humans into demons. However, she only did so once for Yushiro, during her severe illness.

Tamayo had never encountered a demon reverting to a human. Nevertheless, she aids Nezuko and conducts research, hoping that Tanjiro might obtain blood from the 12 Kizuki, which could potentially aid in solving the issue.

Does Nezuko Become Human Again?

Nezuko’s transformation back into a human was a prolonged process, unlike Tanjiro’s swift change. The pivotal moment began in Chapter 147 of the Infinity Castle Arc, when Urokodaki returned to Nezuko, seeking her after providing her with Tanayo’s medication for her human transformation. Unfortunately, Nezuko didn’t consume the medicine properly and fell ill, prompting Urokodaki to care for her.

In the manga, it’s revealed that Nezuko eventually regains her humanity with Tamayo’s medicines. Tamayo, a demon who devoted her life to studying both humans and demons, possesses the rare ability—akin to Muzan—to convert humans into demons. She crafts the medicine using the blood of the 12 mightiest demons (Kizuki) under Muzan’s command.

Throughout the series, Tanjiro combats and defeats the 12 formidable demons (Kizuki), collecting samples of their blood for Tamayo. In Chapter 196 of the manga, Tamayo administers the medicine to Nezuko, initiating her transformation back to a human.

What happens after Nezuko takes the medicine?

In Chapters 200 and 201, a gradual transformation unfolds for Nezuko, where she begins to revert slowly to her human state. As this change progresses, she recovers memories from her human past as well as from her time as a demon. Nezuko begins to think and communicate, showcasing signs of her returning humanity.
