Use of Present Indefinite Tense

Simple Present Tense or Present Indefinite Tense is used to express the following actions, that are simply mentioned without the status of their completeness or incompleteness.

Present Indefinite Tense is used to represent Habitual Actions

Present Indefinite Tense is used to express a habitual action. An action that is practiced by someone for a long time and still practiced by someone in the future. For example:

  • He drinks tea every morning.
  • I get up every day at five o’clock.
  • My watch keeps good time.
  • John uses his truck to carry food and water to his family’s tent camps in the desert.
  • They wash and wax their trucks each week.

Present Indefinite Tense is used to represent General Truths

Present Indefinite Tense is also used to denote “General Truths”, that no one can deny. These actions are happened for a long and may last forever. For example:

  • The sun rises in the east.
  • Honey is sweet.
  • Fortune favors the brave.
  • The earth turns 360 degrees every day.
  • The oceans move in circular currents.

Present Indefinite Tense is used to represent Actions of the Present Time

Present Indefinite Tense also shows the actions that are happening in the Present Period. For example:

  • Here comes the bus!
  • There she goes!
  • Here is the road to market!
  • There is the bus stop!
  • What a beautiful building that is!
  • Oh! He is so smart!
  • There the procession goes for a long time!

Present Indefinite Tense is used to represent Vivid Narrative

Present Indefinite Tense is also used to show vivid narratives. For example:

  • Sohrab now rushes forward and deals a heavy blow to Rustam.
  • Immediately the Sultan hurries to his capital.
  • To express a future event that is part of a fixed program.
  • The next flight is at 9:00 pm tomorrow.
  • The match starts at 10’O clock in the morning.
  • The train leaves at 6:45 am.
  • When does the shop reopen?

Present Indefinite Tense is used to represent Future Events of a fixed time

Present Indefinite Tense is used in place of future tense to introduce the future planned events. For example:

  • The next flight is at 8:00 tomorrow morning.
  • The match starts at 8’O clock.
  • The train leaves at 6:30.
  • When does the coffee house reopen?

Present Indefinite Tense is used to represent Quotations

Present Indefinite Tense uses to represent the quotations as follows:

  • Keats says,“ A thing of beauty is a joy forever.”
  • Tagore says,” Beauty is the ultimate reality.”
  • Osho says,” Self-knowledge is the ultimate knowledge.”

Present Indefinite Tense is used to represent Activities in progress

Activities/ actions that are in progress are often represented in Present Indefinite Tense instead of Present Continuous Tense. For example:

  • I shall wait till you finish your lunch.
  • If it rains we shall get wet.

Present Indefinite Tense is used to represent to introduce the clauses of time and condition

Present Indefinite Tense is also used to introduce the time and condition clauses. For example:

  • The river flows under the bridge.
  • He takes but little pride in his work.
  • Be good, sweet maid.
  • God forgive you!
  • Piper, pipe that song again.
  • Do noble deeds, not dream of them all day.
  • Though this is madness, there is a method to it. Beware lest something worse should happen to you.
