Demon Slayer stands as one of the most popular anime series of the past decade, offering a captivating blend of tragedy, comedy, horror, thriller, and action. Renowned for its exquisitely choreographed fight scenes, well-crafted character design, and gripping plot, the series has garnered immense popularity since its anime adaptation was announced. Ufotable’s consistency in delivering top-notch animation has contributed to some of the finest battle sequences in contemporary anime.

The story revolves around Tanjiro Kamado, the elder brother, on a quest to find a cure for his younger sister, Nezuko Kamado, who has unexpectedly been turned into a demon by Muzan. The central theme of Demon Slayer revolves around Tanjiro’s journey to restore Nezuko back to her human form. The question lingers: will Nezuko ever become human again, and if so, what lengths will Tanjiro have to go to ensure it happens? The series has yet to reveal the answer to this pivotal question, but readers of the manga already know the outcome. For those eager to know without diving into the manga, here’s what you’ve been waiting for.

Background:

The Kamado family lived in the snowy mountains, and Tanjiro worked as a coal seller, often descending to the nearby town to sell coal. Nezuko, his younger sister, assisted their mother in taking care of their other siblings. Tragedy struck the Kamado family when Tanjiro returned home to find his mother and six siblings brutally slain, with Nezuko being the only survivor—transformed into a demon. Attempting to help Nezuko, Tanjiro soon realized that she was no longer human, as she attacked him. In a crucial moment, Giyuu, a Demon Slayer, prepared to kill Nezuko, but Tanjiro protected her, and surprisingly, Nezuko showed glimpses of her human self.

Giyuu recognized that Tanjiro needed the guidance of Urokodaki, a former Demon Slayer, and led him to him. Urokodaki enlightened Tanjiro about the Demon Slayer Corps, the existence of demons, and revealed that a malevolent individual named Muzan was responsible for his family’s tragedy. Under Urokodaki’s tutelage, Tanjiro became a Demon Slayer, dedicating his life to bringing Nezuko back to her human state. While Tanjiro embarked on his journey, Urokodaki took care of Nezuko and conditioned her not to harm humans. Urokodaki’s influence played a vital role in shaping Nezuko’s perceptions of humans, apart from Tanjiro. He showed her a photo of her family whenever she encountered a human, instilling feelings of affection and attachment toward them.

Demon Slayer’s captivating story and well-developed characters have captured the hearts of anime fans worldwide, making it a standout series in the genre.

Is it possible for Nezuko to turn human?

While it’s true that humans can readily transform into demons, the reverse process is not possible. Muzan Kibutsuji, the first demon, possessed the unique ability to change humans into demons, making him the sole entity capable of such a transformation. Demons have existed for ages, possibly even millennia, and unlike humans, they do not age over time.

Demons are difficult to kill unless they encounter demon slayers, are exposed to sunlight, or fall victim to specific techniques. Merely being hungry is not enough to end their existence. Interestingly, Nezuko has proven to be an exception among demons. She is immune to sunlight and possesses an awakened form that grants her a considerable advantage over other demons in battle. Right from the start, Nezuko has stood out among her demonic counterparts.

Giyuu, in contrast to his expectations, witnessed Nezuko defending her brother Tanjiro instead of attempting to devour him. Such instances of demons reverting to human-like behaviors are rare and unheard of.

During the Asakusa Arc, Tanjiro encountered two demons named Tamayo and Yushiro. These demons were unique in that they were entirely free from Muzan’s control. Tamayo, a knowledgeable doctor with expertise in both humans and demons, was the only demon, aside from Muzan, capable of turning a human into a demon. However, she had only done this once, when gravely ill, to Yushiro.

Tamayo had never heard of a demon successfully turning back into a human. However, she provided Nezuko with assistance and began researching the problem, hoping that Tanjiro could bring her blood from the 12 Kizuki, which might hold the key to solving the dilemma.

The world of Demon Slayer is filled with intriguing mysteries and unique characters, making it a compelling and captivating anime series for fans worldwide.

Does Nezuko Become Human Again?

Nezuko’s transformation back into a human was a lengthy process and didn’t happen as swiftly as Tanjiro’s. The journey to reclaim her humanity began in Chapter 147 of the Infinity Castle Arc, where we discover that Urokodaki returned to Nezuko after providing her with Tanayo’s medication, intended to reverse her demon state. However, Nezuko didn’t administer the medicine correctly and fell ill, prompting Urokodaki to care for her.

In the manga, it is eventually revealed that Nezuko does indeed regain her human form, thanks to Tamayo’s medicines. As we’ve seen before, Tamayo is a demon who devoted her life to studying both humans and demons. She is also the only other demon, apart from Muzan, capable of turning a human into a demon. To create the medicine, Tamayo uses the blood of the 12 strongest demons, known as the Kizuki, who serve under Muzan.

Throughout the series, Tanjiro battles the 12 strongest demons (Kizuki) and successfully defeats them, providing Tamayo with samples of their blood. In Chapter 196 of the manga, Tamayo administers the medicine to Nezuko, initiating her transformation back into a human.

The manga beautifully unravels the story of Nezuko’s journey to regain her humanity, showcasing the intricacies of the Demon Slayer world and the emotional depth of its characters.

What happens after Nezuko takes the medicine?

In Chapters 200 and 201, a gradual transformation of Nezuko back into a human is evident. Slowly but surely, she begins to regain her memories from both her human and demon days. Her thought process improves, and she even starts to speak again. The journey of her rediscovering her humanity unfolds with each passing chapter, making it a captivating aspect of the story.
