Introduction:

The company was founded in 1972 by five individuals: Dietmar Hopp, Hans-Werner Hector, Hasso Plattner, Klaus Tschira, and Claus Wellenreuther. They began to execute this job by putting together an enterprise-wide system running on scientific data system (SDS) software which would be more efficient and effective. The task was to improve the way payroll and finance were being handled for the company and for that, they first swapped the traditional mechanical storage of data on punch cards with a common database for storing all data. This SAP software became their very first ERP system which they called SAP R/1 (1 indicates the first version and R referred to real time because the system saved the data instantly as compared to punch cards) after which the company rose as a pioneering name in this particular software industry.
The later improved version, SAP R/2 became the leading SAP software solution in the ERP market space of Europe and other regions for the next ten years. This software suite later evolved into SAP R/3, 3 indicating a three-tier architecture (database, Presentation, and the application layer). As of 2024, the latest version of this software is now SAP S/4HANA Cloud powered with the latest cutting technologies like the ability to migrate the previous database into a new one with the help of modular solutions powered with AI and Rise with SAP technologies.
