Rule # 3 of Changes in the Tenses| Direct & Indirect Speech

    Rule # 3 of the Changes in the Tenses is all about the Future Tense in the Reporting Speech and its effect on the Reported Speech tense. Fortunately, the Future Tense also results in no change in any sense of the Reported Speech just like the Present Tense (Rule # 1). The summary of Rule # 3 is here as under:

           Future Tense that Future Tense.

  The pronouns and other words are changed by following the following rules:

Future Tense,” Present Tense.”:

Future Tense as the Reporting Speech does not change the Present Tense of the Reported Speech.

Examples (Future Tense,” Present Tense.”)

  1. She will say,” I buy very expensive jewelry.”
    • She will say that she buys very expensive jewelry.
  2. He will say to them,” You all fail in the final exam.”
    • He will say to them that they all fail the final exam
  3. They will say,” We are very good at speaking English.”
    • They will say that they are very good at speaking English.
  4. We shall say to her,” You look always good.”
    • We shall say to her that she looks always good.
  5. He will say to him,” It is raining today.”
    • He will say to him that it is raining that day.
  6. She will say,” They have performed very well in the final Cricket match.”
    • She will say that they have performed very well in the final Cricket match.
  7. He will say,” I have not applied to them.”
    • He will say that he has not applied to them.
  8. I shall say,” I have finished my lunch before the bell rings.”
    • I shall say that I have finished my lunch before the bell rings.
  9. They say to her,” He is not a good boy to marry him.”
    • They say to her that he is not a good boy to marry him.
  10. I shall say to you,” They do not have enough resources, and you should help them financially.”
    • I shall say to you that they do not have enough resources, and you should help them financially.

Future Tense,” Past Tense.”

The Future Tense of the Reporting Speech also does not affect the Past Tense of the Reported Speech.

  1. He will say to you,” You were a lazy boy.”
    • He will say to you that you were a lazy boy.
  2. She will say,” They were not the robbers who robbed her house.”
    • She will say that they were not the robbers who robbed her house.
  3. We shall say,” It was not thundering yesterday.”
    • We shall say that it was not thundering the previous day.
  4. They will say,” He did not like this painting very much.”
    • They will say that he did not like that painting very much.
  5. He will say to her,” You had not returned my camera.”
    • He will say to her that she had not returned his camera.
  6. They will say,” He went for a morning walk daily.”
    • They will say that he went for a morning walk daily.
  7. I shall say,” You had broken the cup.”
    • I shall say that you had broken the cup.
  8. You will say to them,” You should help me in solving this puzzle.”
    • You will say to them that they should help you in solving that puzzle.
  9. He will say,” Your doll had no curly hairs.”
    • He will say that your doll had no curly hairs.
  10. I shall say to them,” The clock had struck.”
    • I shall say to them that the clock had struck.

Future Tense,” Future Tense.”

The combination of Future Tense+ Future Tense in both Reporting as well as in Reported Speech also has no change except in the Pronouns and Other Words.

    • She will say that she will stand first in the final exams.
  2. He will say,” It will have been raining since midnight.”
    • He will say that it will have been raining since midnight.
  3. We shall say,” He will not have much money to buy this house.”
    • We shall say that he will not have much money to buy that house.
  4. He will say,” She will be living with her family in New York.”
    • He will say that she will be living with her family in New York.
  5. You will say,” I shall not have the ability to do this job.”
    • You will say that you will not have the ability to do that job.
  6. They will say,” The wages will not have been given to the laborers for long.”
    • They will say that the wages will not have been given to the laborers for long.
  7. He will say to you,” I shall return your money on time.”
    • He will say to you that he will return your money on time.
  8. I shall say,” I shall not meet this man again.”
    • I shall say that I shall not meet that man again.
  9. He will say,” You will have informed them about this accident.”
    • He will say that you will have informed them about that accident.
  10. He will say,” My daughter will look after her.”
    • He will say that his daughter will look after her.
