What exactly do we mean by freshwater animals? Freshwater animals are those that inhabit non-saline water bodies such as lakes, rivers, marshes, and swamps, as opposed to the ocean or saltwater environments. These creatures cannot survive in saltwater due to the excessive salt content, which their bodies cannot manage. Freshwater habitats support a diverse range of animal life, showcasing a multitude of species adapted to these specific conditions.

Freshwater Animals and Their Traits
- Freshwater River Dolphins: There exist five species, including the Irawaddy, Tucuxi, South Asian, and Amazon river dolphins. The Baiji dolphin was formerly part of this group but is now presumed extinct. During Amazon river floods, these dolphins can be seen swimming among trees.
- Yangtze Finless Porpoises: These porpoises lack a dorsal fin and have a distinctly round head, creating an appearance of a beak-less face. They are critically endangered, with fewer than 1,000 individuals remaining worldwide.
- Alligators: Known for their acute sense of smell, alligators can detect blood from several miles away. They possess 80 teeth, continuously replacing those they lose, resulting in the replacement of several thousand teeth throughout their lives.

- Cottonmouth Snakes: Venomous and capable of reaching lengths of 3 to 4 feet, cottonmouth snakes derive their name from the light coloration inside their mouths.
- Freshwater Fish: With over 10,000 species, freshwater environments host a diverse array of fish. Some species, such as salmon and trout, migrate from the sea to freshwater rivers to reproduce (anadromous), while others live in freshwater but reproduce in saltwater (catadromous).
