How to prune roses?

Those who know me know that roses are on my list of favorite plants, I love them for their versatility and the thousands of types that we can find, not to mention the diverse ranges of colors that we can have in our garden, I simply love them.

When we talk about care, pruning rose bushes is the most important thing, including the constant watering that these plants require. When pruning, the main thing that is done is to eliminate dead stems to make way for new roses that grow strongly.

Pruning is done once a year in order to strengthen the plant, to achieve stronger, more beautiful, and healthier roses. One thing is for sure, Bed weed control should be done regularly.

Types of pruning and time of year

The main pruning of rose bushes is done at the end of winter, when we have already passed the coldest time of the year, especially when we see that the frosts have gone and the days are beginning to get longer. The other pruning called maintenance is carried out at the end of the summer season, here we remove dry wood and withered roses. With this cleaning pruning we strengthen the rose bush to withstand the cold of winter.

As I told you, the first pruning is essential and the second is complementary, with both you will be able to have beautiful and strong rose bushes.

How to prune roses?

The first thing is to get the necessary elements and tools for pruning. Scissors are the most important, good scissors, well-sharpened and of the necessary size with respect to the rose bush, will allow us to make clean cuts with less effort.

The second thing is a good pair of gloves so that our hands do not suffer from punctures, with that we are ready. Let’s do it!

Step by Step

1. Let’s start by removing all the wilted leaves and flowers. Branches, wood, everything you see dry. Also all those that show signs that they will dry out soon.

2. The so-called “suckers” are those branches that do not produce flowers, these stems take up nutrients from our plant, removing those with flowers that do need them, we must also remove these suckers from the plant. They can be identified because their leaves are light green and smaller, and they have many more thorns.

3. The branches that we must preserve are the young ones that have buds. For those who do not know the term, the “buds” are the buds that we can see on each branch, many of them are found under the leaves, they are light green in color and new branches and leaves grow from them.

4. The strongest branches should be cut above the fourth or fifth bud, those branches will be able to feed all these shoots. If the branch is weaker, leave a maximum of 2 buds.

5. The cuts you make should be approximately one centimeter above the buds.

6. If you see branches that go in a different orientation from the rest of the rose bush, you should also cut them. In this way we are giving a more orderly shape to our rose bush.

7. The type of cut should be diagonal with an angle of about 45 degrees.

8. To finish our pruning, we must clean the base of the rose bush well and add a few centimeters of compost and nutrients that can be found in garden stores.

Well my friends, I hope this step-by-step is useful to you. In another of my articles we will talk about the basic care of the rose bush during the year and if you have any other questions, write to me in the comments!
