Reduce, Reuse, Recreate: Crafting Wonders With Recycled Card
Now that the celebration has come to a close, it is time to take down the decorations. One more task remains, though. How do you usually handle receiving greeting cards for special occasions like birthdays, Christmas, or other holidays?

The plastic coatings or glitter content of many greeting cards make them non-recyclable. So, when it’s time to take down your cards, here is a rundown of some ideas for using those old cards around the house.
Can You Rely on Throwing Away Old Cards?
When we have a sentimental attachment to the cards or if they are from loved ones who have gone away, it may be a real pain to toss them away. However, if you would want to save cards, particularly cherished cards and mementos from loved ones, that is very reasonable.
Some of the most meaningful vintage greeting cards you might have kept and will likely treasure for the rest of your life are in your possession. Whether you can accomplish the same is conditional on your storage capabilities.
1. Mini Diary
This little notebook uses only one playing card for its cover! With its convenient size, this notebook is ideal for jotting down random ideas, poetry, grocery lists, and to-do lists. It would be perfect for a stocking stuffer if you made it.

To adorn them, you can use the following:
- Buttons
- Gemstones
- Twine
- Retro postage
- Paper for making scrapbooks
Remove the birthday or anniversary digits. To spice up the scrapbook, cut an assortment of diamonds or hearts and add them!
2. A Celebration of Alice in Wonderland
For an Alice in Wonderland-themed celebration, playing cards are an essential item. You may use them as decorations anywhere because they are significant to the plot.
You may suspend them from the sky or even a tree branch. If you give them paper arms, heads, and legs, you can turn them into little men! You can even use a recycled card to make gift tags.
3. Notion Labels
Repurposing playing cards into present tags is a simple and valuable idea. They need not be elaborate if you like. Experiment with cutting around the edge to make a new shape or add little decorations. Using an artistic punch is my go-to method for an instant polished appearance. Finish it by punching an opening in the middle and tying on some ribbon!
Make unique decorations out of playing cards!
4. Create a Box for Valuables

A charming little treasure box may be fashioned with only two of your beloved Christmas cards with this delightful origami project.
One of the ways to recycle old cards is to make a little box. Kids love seeing their creations come to life, and then there’s the extra fun of choosing what to put inside! Making something usable from something they would have considered trash is a terrific opportunity to teach kids about recycling and encourage them to think creatively about resources.
Since they are sturdy and long-lasting, old cards are ideal for this project. Might these little containers hold Santa’s key? They might serve a unique use over the holiday season. Alternatively, hide some goodies for the reindeer. Wrap little presents in one of these charming trinket boxes! So, instead of throwing away your fleeting cards, why not make it into a keepsake box?
5. Make Gift Boxes More Affordable
The item itself isn’t the only thing that matters when delivering presents; the box and wrapping paper are also essential. Use your old holiday cards as present boxes instead of buying all the extras that come with gifting gifts. Their multicolored patterns make them seem like wrapping paper, and you can use them to make boxes, too.
To make a square, just trace it onto your card. After that, round the perimeter of your square with half circles. After you’ve drawn the square and four half circles, cut them out. Lastly, center a decorative square on your box, stuff it with your present, and seal it close by taping or gluing all four half circles. For an extra special touch, don’t forget to attach a “To” & “From” gift tag!
6. A triangular container is valuable for storing holiday cards, ornaments, and favors.

Once again, Grandma Spikes has offered her recommendation. My “creative genes” are visible here. There might not be many cards in your collection that are large enough for this undertaking. You may get some excellent gift wrap here that you can reuse. A rectangle of 28 cm by 10 cm must be cut using whatever you like.
Lay the most extended length on the table or cutting mat with the pattern side down and fold it in half. Halfway down each short side, mark 5 cm. Then, using a tape measure, draw lines between the center and border of the fold to the 5 cm mark. If you want to build your box, it’s best to use faint pencil traces that can be easily rubbed off.
Make a score around the triangles. Punch a hole in the top (almost) corner of each flap using a hole punch or cut a hole with scissors, following the pattern. Lastly, stuff the box with little treats, close the flaps, and tie a bow. Additionally, include a gift tag.
Isn’t that impressive?
In the end!
The originality of these ideas for recycling old cards makes them so appealing. While some crafts need unique tools and techniques, the majority involve finding novel ways to work with existing materials to produce end products that are both aesthetically pleasing and functionally sound.
Ensure to tell your kids to keep their old cards before you split up for the holidays! Just because we’re going to get off to a great start in the new year by recycling in a big way.
